Influenza A circulates in far more hosts than poultry, swine and people. South America carries lineages found nowhere else, shaped by flyways that rarely intersect with the Northern Hemisphere, and characterizing that standing diversity matters both in its own right and as the background against which incursions of highly pathogenic viruses must be read. This area also gathers the lab’s work on influenza in less-studied hosts, from wild waterfowl and gulls to dogs and camels.
